Batteries FAQ

max-555

This week we are sharing one of the best kept secrets!

How to look after your batteries. as the weather gets cooler many people will notice that the batteries on their radios will seem to run out faster.

There are three main reasons for this:

  • Over charging
  • Keeping your radios in the cold
  • Battery memory in NiMH

The best way to avoid overcharging your batteries is simply to wait until they have fully discharged before recharging, this helps to increase the life span of your batteries, and has the added benefit of reducing the amount of time before the memory effect is noticeable.

After charging, batteries will slowly "leak" charge between the terminals. When a cold battery is used it will often be unable to keep up with the demands that everyday use puts on them. Simply store your radios at room temperature or get your staff to keep them in their inside pocket to help make sure that your radios are ready for use.

Over several years of recharging all batteries will lose some capacity and run out of charge faster. This "memory" effect can be reset in many batteries or monitored to make replacement costs predictable and manageable.
