While retaining basic features of its popular predecessor the IC-R2, the IC-R5 contains many improvements including a built-in ferrite rod antenna, a total of 1250 memory channels which can be assigned a 6-character channel name, external DC power jack and DTCS tone squelch. All these features combined with a high degree of usability means that the IC-R5 will be equally at home with any casual listener of broadcast stations or the serious scanning enthusiast seeking a pocket sized quality receiver.

With a super wide frequency range of 0.150–1309.995MHz in AM, FM and WFM modes the majority of broadcasts and public communications can all be received. The IC-R5 can scan and listen to international, national, regional and local broadcast radio stations, plus many more interesting frequencies such as aircraft, air traffic control and marine bands. The user can even listen to terrestrial analogue TV.

A built-in ferrite rod antenna improves reception for AM broadcast stations without the need to connect a whip antenna. In addition, when you listen to FM broadcast stations you have a choice of using the main antenna or a cable running from the optional earphone, SP-13 or headphone, HP-4 to improve reception.

The 1000 memory channels plus 50 band scan edges and 200 auto memory write channels provide more than enough capacity to locate and store interesting signals. The regular 1000 channels can be divided into 18 memory banks (Max. 100 channels per bank) for flexible grouping. Each regular channel, scan edge and memory bank can be assigned a 6-character name.

Designed for ease of use, the IC-R5 is ultra compact measuring only 58(W) x 86(H) x 27(D) mm, enabling it to fit neatly in the palm of your hand. Built in a drip-resistant case, the radio is protected from harsh weather and damp conditions. The use of a large internal speaker ensures loud, crystal clear audio whatever the level of background noise. In addition, on reception of weak signals an automatic squelch system maintains the signal quality.

The IC-R5 has an external DC power jack for operation with the standard BC-07 AC charger or optional cigarette lighter cable, CP-18A/E. The standard Ni-Cd batteries are charged simultaneously during operation, making this a useful function while using the IC-R5 in your vehicle or at home.

The IC-R5 supports 9 scan types for maximum receiver utilisation and ease of use. Auto memory write scan searches for a signal within a specified frequency range, and when a signal is detected, the received frequency, mode and tone settings are automatically stored into an auto memory write channel bank. 200 auto memory write channels allow you to recall the memorised stations easily.

The [BAND], [TS], [Mode] and [V/M] operating buttons have been enlarged to make the IC-R5 very easy to use. The [BAND] button allows you to access eleven pre-set operating bands quickly and automatically selects the most appropriate mode for each operating band.

The IC-R5 can be cloned from a Windows ® PC via the optional USB cable, OPC-478U. Using the optional CS-R5 cloning software, channel, bank, scan settings, etc can be programmed from the PC. The optional RS-232C cloning cable, OPC-478 is still available, as is the OPC-474, for transferring memory data from one IC-R5 to another.

The IC-R5 comes complete with BC-07 UK battery charger, 2 AA rechargeable batteries, FA-S270C antenna, belt clip, handstrap and a handbook.
